Supernormal
“A supernormal design distills the design down to its essence in a way that makes it easily recognizable, usable, and normal, while improving upon it.”
Utilizing this perspective of design created by designers Jasper Morrison and Naoto Fukasawa, I participated in a two-week sprint project in college to apply this way of thinking about design to the mortar and pestle, an already recognizable design that has existed for tens of thousands of years.
Cube’s form is an invitation to the user - lift the pestle off the top of the mortar, and the functionality immediately becomes clear.
While working at Harris Potteries, I had the opportunity to further refine the design and create a small batch of prototypes in ceramic.
